CSU520 Artificial Intelligence - Spring 2009 - Midterm notes

Professor Futrelle - College of Computer and Information Sciences, Northeastern U., Boston, MA

Version of March 9th 2009

Study guide for Midterm, Wednesday, March 11th

Covering chapters 5, 7, and 8 (with some material possible from chapters 1 through 4).

The reading assignments were:

Chapter 5 - Read to the bottom of page 146. Focus on the map coloring constraint example, including figures 5.4 and 5.5. Map coloring will be included in a quiz. (There are no readings in chapter 6. But if you want to do a game-related project - nothing even similar to board games please! - you'll need to study chapter 6 in detail.)

Chapter 7 - Read to the bottom of page 217. Study figure 7.5 until you understand the point it's making. Pay special attention to the Resolution concept starting on page 213, as well as the example of resolution shown in figure 7.13.

Chapter 8 - Again, not easy material, as in chapter 7. Read through page 255.

You will have four or five questions to answer, chosen from the five possibilities below.

Chapter 5

Both chapter 5 possibilities will be based on map coloring, with a map different from the Australia one.

5A. Bactracking search as in Figure 5.4.

5B. Forward checking as in Figure 5.6.

Chapter 7

7A. You will be given Figure 7.11, the standard logical equivalences. You will be asked to use them to do some transformations similar to those on pages 212 and 213.

7B. You will work through a resolution example similar to Figure 7.13.

Chapter 8

8A. A question similar to Exercise 8.6 in the book, but I will give you the vocabulary to use.
