1.1 Path expressions

A crucial component of the language is the ability to select nodes or 
combinations of nodes in a tree. Our syntax for information selection in a 
tree is based on the idea of generalised path expressions [CACS94], which 
permit browsing a tree without a complete knowledge of its structure.
