On behalf of the Program Committee of the NCO Workshop on New Visions for
Software Design and Productivity: Research and Applications, we are pleased
to invite you to participate at the meeting on December 13-14 at Vanderbilt
University, Nashville, TN. The output of the workshop will be a public
report prepared by the Federal government's Software Design and Productivity
(SDP) Coordinating Group (CG) that summarizes the ideas identified in the
workshop. The workshop report will be used by Government agencies and policy
makers in developing a broad, long-term Federal software design and
productivity research agenda and guiding future software R&D programs.

The meeting will be conducted in an open workshop format. After an initial
set of short introductory panel discussions, breakout sessions will be
formed to elaborate on the four main themes of the meeting:

    The Future of Software and Software Research

    New Software Development Paradigms

    Software for the Real World

    Software for Network-Centric Distributed Systems

Deliberations at the breakout sessions will be summarized in 15 minute
presentations, which will be presented at the out-briefing session of the
workshop.

As an invitee, you will be asked to participate in one of the breakout
sessions. Since White Papers of all participants will be accessible through
the workshop website before the meeting, you may assume that your initial
position is known by others. Your final contribution to the workshop
deliverables will include the following two items:

    1. Contribution to the out-briefing material during the discussions.

    2. Final version of your White Paper.

    Deadline for submitting the final version of your White Paper is
    January 15, 2002. The final report of the workshop will include
    only workshop participants' White Papers.
