Greetings,
Thank you to those who have promptly submitted their meeting
registration forms.
Currently 100 people have submitted meeting registrations to me and
only 75 of these have called for hotel reservations. Please be sure
and make your reservations as soon as possible to assure your hotel
accommodations.
The hotel has extended the period to call for hotel rooms to Friday,
June 6, 1997 to allow those folks who may have been on travel or
vacation the last two weeks; HOWEVER, I will take meeting
registrations til June 27, 1997.
Again, please copy "Demo Days Registration Submission Form" in the
subject line on your completed registration form in order to receive a
timely confirmation receipt notice.
If you have any questions, please let me know right away.
Thanks for your prompt attention to this matter.

2nd Annual Evolutionary Design of Complex Software (EDCS) Program
Workshop and Demo Days
Doubletree Suites Hotel
Seattle Washington
July 21-24, 1997
Demonstration Days - July 21-22
Program Workshop - July 23-24
General Information
You are invited to attend the 2nd Annual EDCS Program Workshop and
Demo Days July 21-24, 1997
"See the Technology You'll Be Using Tomorrow"
Evolutionary Systems are those that are capable of accommodating
change over an extended system lifetime with reduced risk and
cost/schedule impact. Most of our complex defense systems depend on
software for their successful operation and, as a result, the software
in those systems is the primary vehicle for adapting to change.
The EDCS Program is providing for the development and experimental
application of new software technologies which can enable significant
improvements in military mission effectiveness and information
superiority. The goal is the capability to produce software intensive
military systems that are highly flexible and adaptable to meet
changing requirements - evolutionary systems.
The ultimate EDCS vision is automated change. The program has created
some exciting demonstrations of how the emerging technologies apply to
a number of military scenarios related to evolving software for:
Satellite Ground Stations; Heavy Bomber (B-2); the Global
Transportation Network; E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar
System (JSTARS); Missile Guidance, Navigation, and Control (MGN&C),
and; F-16.
EDCS participants will be demonstrating how technology in 5 areas
contributes to military scenarios of change. These areas are:
1) Rationale Capture and Software Understanding: Rationale is captured
in a knowledge base and represented in a manner that permits
explanation, exploration, and management. Constraint maintenance
techniques can be used to monitor rationale, such as design decisions,
so that future changes to the system do not violate previous
requirements.
2) Architecture and Generation: Architecture work combines
descriptions of component functionality with specifications of how a
component interacts, coordinates, cooperates, and communicates with
other components. The goal is to recognize the fundamental qualities
imparted to systems by these various interconnection strategies,
verify that implementations achieve these qualities, and encourage
informed choices. Executable code can be generated or composed in the
context of the specified architecture.
3) High Assurance and Real-Time: Design, development, deployment,
integration, interoperation, and evolution of systems that provide
evidence supporting high confidence that all critical system
requirements will be met. Two approaches are being explored. The first
combines testing and analysis of executable code and architectural
representations. The second emphasizes providing run-time assurances
that the system will conform to desired properties.
4) Design Management: Addresses a scaleable information substrate that
is aimed at the retention, organization, and exploitation of all
useful software information. It will: provide shared views of the
information infrastructure; support information conceptualization,
representation, and manipulation of multi-media software artifacts;
enable effective collaboration in a distributed setting, and; provide
consistency management of all software-pertinent artifacts. It will
also support processes for the controlled evolution of the information
substrate.
5) Dynamic Languages: The capabilities of dynamic languages to support
rapid prototyping and optimized software performance are combined with
techniques to increase reliability and predictability, and facilitate
interoperability with more conventional procedural languages.
EDCS projects in these areas include a mix of efforts -- ranging from
some basic research efforts co-funded with NSF to several efforts
co-funded with the US Air Force and US Army that are developing and
packaging technology and conducting demonstrations. Demonstrations on
July 21 and 22 will include both individual technologies and
integration efforts.
On the morning of July 21st, a set of overview presentations and video
clips will be provided which tie various EDCS technologies to military
scenarios. Following the overview presentations, on Monday afternoon
and Tuesday, numerous demonstrations of existing EDCS technology will
be available. Your participation is welcomed. On July 23-24, workshops
for EDCS community members only will address the five technology areas
identified above and will focus on the direction of those technologies
in the next few years.
Preliminary Agenda
NOTES:
1) Demonstration Days attendees are urged to be in place at the
Doubletree Inn Ballroom at 0800 on Monday, July 21. The morning block
of presentations are very important as they set the context for the
demonstrations that will follow on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.
2) EDCS Program participants are requested (and expected) to attend
BOTH FULL DAY SESSIONS of the program workshop on July 23-24. A more
detailed agenda will be available shortly.
3) Due to space constraints, two co-located Doubletree Hotels are
being used for both meeting rooms and overnight guests. Please note
the use of both facilities on Monday, July 21.
4) Registration tables will be set up at the Doubletree Suites during
breakfast on July 21. At 0800, the registration table will move to the
Doubletree Inn Ballroom to accommodate late arrivals. Registration
