There are a number of such tools available. I have downloaded word2x,
which looked like the best of them. It works sometimes, but I don't
think it works with Word2000 files (based on the observation that it
has been less successful lately in converting Word files submitted to
hiring). It also can't accept stdin, so you can't pipe things to it.
If anybody has something better, I'd love to hear about it.
