Professor Smith joins the Northeastern faculty from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he was a research assistant professor in computer science. He earned his PhD in computer science at Johns Hopkins University.
Professor Smith’s research in natural language processing and computational linguistics primarily focuses on building statistical models of human language. His work on applications to information extraction and retrieval and data mining has been supported by major grants from organizations such as the NSF and DARPA.
Professor Smith is also involved in several cross-disciplinary projects with Northeastern faculty colleagues in the humanities and social sciences. One such project examines reprinting patterns of articles in 19th century U.S. newspapers to detect evidence of political, religious, and economic networks.
