Professor Smith came to Northeastern from the University of California in Santa Cruz, where she completed her PhD in computer science. She holds a faculty appointment in both the College of Computer and Information Science and the College of Art, Media & Design.

Her research focuses on building procedural content generators controlled by human designers. Professor Smith is particularly interested in the impact of procedural content generation on game design and how it can be used to create content that wouldn’t be possible without a computer.
