Professor Wang's research concerns advanced technologies for pattern recognition, learning, understanding, and visualization, using intelligent techniques. He is creating a virtual laboratory in which testing and experiments can be conducted on multimedia Internet for various two- and three-dimensional images, patterns and objects, including articulated objects. The techniques he has developed are applicable to real-life problems in many fields, including industrial-parts inspection, document-image recognition, and military needs. He has also worked with the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on several image-analysis projects, including optical character recognition (OCR) and bank-check recognition, and has been granted three USA/Europe OCR patents. In addition, Professor Wang has published more than 130 techinical papers and 23 books.

A full professor at Northeastern University, Professor Wang is an IARP Fellow and IEEE Outstanding Achievement awardee. He has served as Zijiang Visiting Chair, ECNU (East China Normal University); iCORE (Informatics Circle of Research Excellence) Visiting Professor at University of Calgary, Canada; been a member of the University of Oregon and Boston University faculties; and has been a senior researcher at Southern Bell, GTE Labs, and Wang Labs.
