Configuring Eudora to use IMAP at CCIS
This document describes how to configure the Eudora mail client to use the IMAP services at the Northeastern University College of Computer and Information Science. To learn what IMAP is or why you might want to use it, see our general overview of IMAP at CCIS. For more information on how to use Eudora with IMAP, please see the Eudora User Guide and Eudora's on-line help.
Configuration Steps
These steps describe how to configure Windows version 5.1 of Eudora. The steps required to configure the Macintosh version are almost identical.
| 1. | Start Eudora. |
| 2. | Choose Personalities under the Tools menu. |
| 3. | Right click on the Personalities frame (the one on the left with the column heading "Persona") and choose New... |
| 4. | Choose Skip directly to advanced account setup and click Finish. |
| 5. | On the Generic Properties tab, set the following: |
| Personality Name: CCIS IMAP Real Name: Firstname Lastname Return Address: username@ccs.neu.edu Login Name: username SMTP Server: localhost (if using our recommended SSH tunneling method) Default Domain: ccs.neu.edu Secure Sockets when Sending: Never when you are done, the tab should look something like this: ![]() |
|
| 6. | On the Incoming Mail tab, set the following: |
| Server: imap.ccs.neu.edu IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix: Mail/ choose Configuration: IMAP Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternative Port Note:: for IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix, use the name of the sub-directory in your CCIS home directory that you use to store mail followed by a slash (/). If you leave this field blank, Eudora may operate very slowly because it will attempt to treat all of the files in your home directory as potential mailboxes/mailfolders. Mail/ or mail/ are common defaults. when you are done, the tab should look something like this: ![]() |
|
| 7. | Choose [OK] and you are done with the setup! |
IMAP with Eudora Tip:
When you delete messages in Eudora (and most IMAP
mail programs), the messages are just flagged as deleted but aren't really removed
from the server. Eudora indicates this by changing the cute little server status
icon (
)
to a red X (
).
To actually delete the message off the server, choose Purge Messages from the Message menu.
If you have issues with the configuration steps presented in this document that are not resolved by the Eudora User Guide, please send mail to systems@ccs.neu.edu with as much information as possible about your problem. We will do what we can to help you resolve the problem, but please note: CCIS Systems does not have the resources to support non-CCIS machines, so we may have to refer you to other forms of support.
