Natalia Romanovna
Makarova (1940- ), the Soviet-born ballerina, is admired for her technical proficiency and dramatic eloquence. Born and trained in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), she danced with the Kirov Ballet from 1959 to 1970, when she defected to the West. Subsequently she performed with the American Ballet Theatre and other companies, produced her own version of "The Kingdom of the Shades" (1974) from La Bayadère by Marius Petipa for the American Ballet Theatre, and in 1980 staged a complete version of the ballet. She excelled in classical roles, notably Giselle, and in contemporary works by such choreographers as the American Jerome Robbins and the British Antony Tudor. Makarova displayed her comic talents when she played a prima ballerina on Broadway in the 1983 revival of On Your Toes.
