COM 1122: Computer Science Overview 2

The purpose of this course is to introduce you to some computing
technology, including the Unix operating system and the Internet.
The skills you gain in this class will be used during the rest
of the your time as a computer science major.
Grading:
- Grading will consist entirely of homework and quiz scores.
- Homework will be assigned at the end of most class periods, due by
the beginning of the next class period. Late homework will be
discounted, and homework that is more than one week late will not
be graded.
- Quizzes may be given at the beginning of class, and may cover any
material previously presented. Because of the quizzes, it is
important to attend class and to arrive on time.
- To allow for illness and other exceptional situations, your
two lowest scores (whether homework or quizzes) will not be
used to compute your grade in the course.
- There will not be a midterm or final exam.
Books:
No books are required for this course. Some handouts may be made
available through a copy center. If this happens you will be notified
during class.
Schedule:
- Unix: history, login/out, finger/who/email, X Window System.
- Internet: history, naming, uses. The World-Wide Web.
- Unix: file permissions, directories, wild cards, redirection, pipes.
- Internet: electronic mail, newsgroups, file transfer, etiquette.
- Networks: protocols, bandwidth, latency, compression.
- Emacs: history and use.
- Architecture: memory hierarchy, machine language.
- Number systems: binary and floating point arithmetic.
- Unix: shells, scripts, processes.
