COM 1122: Computer Science Overview 2

The purpose of this course is to introduce you to some computing technology, including the Unix operating system and the Internet. The skills you gain in this class will be used during the rest of the your time as a computer science major.

Grading:

Books: No books are required for this course. Some handouts may be made available through a copy center. If this happens you will be notified during class.

Schedule:

  1. Unix: history, login/out, finger/who/email, X Window System.
  2. Internet: history, naming, uses. The World-Wide Web.
  3. Unix: file permissions, directories, wild cards, redirection, pipes.
  4. Internet: electronic mail, newsgroups, file transfer, etiquette.
  5. Networks: protocols, bandwidth, latency, compression.
  6. Emacs: history and use.
  7. Architecture: memory hierarchy, machine language.
  8. Number systems: binary and floating point arithmetic.
  9. Unix: shells, scripts, processes.
