Competition Objectives and Rules
A set of white boxes will be deployed in the competition area. Some of these boxes contain an RF-Egg (mote that sends a beacon signal - SOS message). The objective of the competition is to find the RF-Eggs. The purpose is to build a heterogeneous search and rescue system.
The beacon packet is sent at several power levels. The beacon packet contain information about the identity of the RF-Egg and the transmission power level used for this specific packet. The teams are only allowed to control their system from their cell phone. The laptop can be used to display sensed information in order to assist in the search process.
Points
The teams have to find the RF-Eggs as soon as possible and mark them using the team flag. The first team to mark an RF Egg receives 30 points. The second team 20 points. The third team 10 point. If a team incorrectly marks a box, it looses one point.
General Rules
During all competition phases, the team members are not allowed to go inside the competition arena. If a robot/mote is blocked and requires the physical intervention of the team, then a penalty of one point is applied.
Phase I - non-adversarial scenario: The purpose of the phase is to demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the teams systems. During the non-adversarial competition no intentional attack on the other teams systems is allows. Any such attack will result in a penalty of 10 points.
Phase II – adversarial scenario:
- Cyber-attacks: during the first part of the adversarial scenario only cyber-attacks are allowed. The teams are not allowed to jam or transmit over the beacon frequency. Attacks on the devices (motes, laptop, cellphone) and links (Bluetooth, ZigBee) are allowed.
- All-attacks: during this part of the competition all attacks are allows including physically preventing the other teams robots from moving. No human physical attacks or intervention are allowed. Attacks that aim at destroying the other teams equipment are not allowed.
FAQ
- Can we invite our friends and family to watch the competition? Yes, everybody.
- Can we exceed the allocated budget by paying ourselves? This requires the instructor permission and will only be granted for well motivated reasons.
- Can we jam or transmit on the beacon frequency? No.
- Can we reset our mote during the competition? Yes, but you have to bring the robot back to the start point.
