CSG254: Network Security
Practical Systems Security Lab
Lab Assignment 2
Due date: 1 week.
Important note: In the report of your assignment indicate what each
team member did.
Please read this entire assignment, including the notes at the bottom, before
beginning. For this week's assignment, each team will be asked to perform the
following:
- On one of the team systems, install Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced
Server (provided). Choose a hostname for the system.
talk on the network using an IP address of your choice.
Set your workgroup
name (don't use domains) to the team name. Make sure you install the
following services during the installation process:
- IIS (defaults with server extensions): Create a web root
with team name on the web page. Also install management and
monitoring tools (all).
- FTP (under IIS subcomponents): set it up so that team
members could (theoretically) update web pages remotely using
FTP in a relatively secure way.
- NetBIOS (during net settings stage: custom), SMB File
Sharing: Create a folder with at least one file in it and share
it to the Everyone group (full permissions).
- Create two additional user-level accounts on the system:
class and teacher.
- Configure the IP address on both computers to be
192.168.x.y where x is your group number and y is a number of your
choosing. Your default router will be 192.168.x.1 on your given subnet
where x is your group number.
- Send to the TA via e-mail the IP addresses of both systems, the host
name of them, and the Passwords of the class and teacher accounts.
- Make sure both computers are up and running and that all services
and daemons are running.
IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Do NOT install service packs, patches, firewalls, or any other
software/service that is not explicitly noted in this homework during the
installation process or otherwise.
IMPORTANT NOTE 2: When choosing IP addresses, don't choose .2 and .3. Please
choose random numbers on your given subnet (this will be important later, for
learning about network scans and probes).
