Matthias Felleisen September 2008: Shriram Krishnamurthi has taken over as Editor of the column. Education is one of the best technology transfer mechanisms. It happens in many different contexts: schools, universities, conferences, industry, and research labs. We educate students, colleagues, teachers, and people on the bus or train. The purpose of this column is to help "functional programmers" with the task of educating the public about our ideas, our results, our work. Some of us have dveeloped a course on functional programming that is on the critical path for all students and that is accepted by most of the faculty. Perhaps we can learn from this experience how to convince our department or college to get such a course in place. Others may have developed a trick on how to convince colleagues to give a functional language or technique a try in a particular context. Although we may not think about such things as "research" per se, they are important and helpful to our work. They help us spread the word about our research and may help convince relevant people that our work deserves funding and support. For that reason, I have started this JFP column so that people can write short contributions and tell us about their courses, tricks, tools, and other educational contributions. Please contact Shriram Krishnamurthi (Brown) if you are interested in writing a column. At this Web page, you can find previous columns, style files, and a link to the Journal of Functional Programming. | |||||||||
