My recommendation for hw 1 is to just install what you need:
A Java compiler and the rt.jar for DemeterJ as descibed at
http://www.ccs.neu.edu/research/demeter/course/f00/runningjava.html

In hw 2 you will need both DemeterJ and DJ.
http://www.ccs.neu.edu/research/demeter/DJ/docs/install.html

tells you how.
