Briefing

The purpose of the application is to create a better system than the “lockout” feature found on most cable TV systems.  The new application is used on the TV itself, and helps parents control what TV channels their children can watch.  The application also allows parents to specify what type of program content should be blocked, how much TV children can watch each day, and during what time zones children are restricted from watching TV.

Parents create a password to be able to set up the system.  This password is a security feature so that children cannot change the system settings.  When setting up the system, parents create a kids channel menu, which has the channels they want their children to be able to access.  When kids want to watch TV, they select a channel to watch from this menu.  At that point, the system automatically performs all the checks that parents have set up.  The system makes sure the program content is not blocked and that the current time is not a restricted viewing time.  The system also keeps track of how much TV has been watched, and shuts off when the limit set by parents has been reached for the day.

Parents also have the ability to disable the system, so that they can watch TV without any restrictions.  When parents are done watching TV, they can set the system back to “kids” mode.

Scenario Tasks

(1) Set up the system to allow three channels for your children to watch: channel 2, channel 4, and channel 195 (NESN).

(2) Set up the system to place these restrictions on your children’s viewing: set a maximum of 4 hours of TV time per day, block access to programs with violent content, and do not allow children to watch TV between 3PM and 5PM.

(3) It is 8PM and there is a violent show on channel 4.  You want to test the system.  See if your kids would be able to watch that show.  Then, set the system up into “parent” mode, so that none of the children restrictions apply.  See if you can watch the program now.  When done, set the system back into “kid” mode.

Observations

User Test 1 Notes:

o        For task 1, tried clicking on many different buttons on the front page to try to set up the channels.  Did not try to log in.  Said that the available channels screen should not appear as the initial screen that parents see.  The first screen should just allow parents to login and set a password, and go from there.

o        For task 1, after checking the check boxes for the 3 channels, wasn’t sure what to do next.  Eventually tried Exit.

o        Successfully completed task 2.

o        Successfully completed task 3.

User Test 2 Notes:

o        For task 1, this user logged in.  Said the way for parents to login on the front screen should be to push one button called “Parents Login” instead of the whole section there is now.  When setting up the channels, got confused by the buttons at the bottom of the screen.  Said there should be two buttons directly below the check boxes.  One button called “Select All Channels” and one button called “Unselect All Channels.”  Also, user did not like the “Exit” button because the user wasn’t sure that system would accept the updates made.  Said there should be an “Accept Changes” button and a “Cancel Changes” button.

o        Successfully completed task 2.

o        When performing task 3, wasn’t sure how to change channels.  Thought they would use an outside remote control.  I told the user to use what is before them on the screen as if it was a computer.  Then, the user pressed the “Watch” button.

User Test 3 Notes:

o        User 3 successfully logged in.  Set up channels correctly.  Did not like the “Exit” button because they felt they would exit the system entirely, which is not what they wanted to do.  Said there should be an “OK” button instead, which would accept changes, and leave the sub-screen.

o        This user also did not like the “Exit” buttons in the sub-screens.  User said they all should be replaced by “OK” buttons.  Said the “Exit” button on the main Parental Controls screen should say something like “Exit Parental Controls.”  User was confused by the term “time zone.”  This phrase reminded the user of Eastern Standard Time, or Pacific Standard Time, etc.  User said should instead use the phrase “Time Frame” to refer to a set period of time lasting from a specific beginning time to a specific ending time.  Also, when the user set the time frame of 3PM to 5PM, the user did not check off any day to apply it to.  User was confused by that part of the screen.  User said there should be an error message which tells the user to check off which days of the week to apply the time frame restriction.

o        User successfully completed task 3.
