Paper Requirement for Alan Feuer

  1. Paper: Alan Feuer and Javed Aslam, "Comparing Site Search to Web Search". Submitted to SIGIR'06.

  2. Description: This paper consists of an extensive empirical analysis of site-level user search behavior vs. web-level user search behavior, with an eye toward understanding the similarities and differences in order that a user's interactions with search systems may be improved. Data was collected from the query logs of 200 site-level search engines, and an analysis of this data was compared to similar analyses performed on web-level search engines.

  3. Acceptance rate: Typically well below 20%.

  4. Student's contribution to paper: The paper was Alan's idea from its conception, and Alan wrote the paper in its entirety. I provided feedback on the paper, and I made a number of suggestions for various analyses, but it was actually quite generous for Alan to include me as an author at all. The paper is Alan's work, start-to-finish.

  6. Why should this paper be accepted as qualifying the paper requirement: This is a nice paper, conceived and written entirely by Alan and submitted to a premier conference in the field. I think it has a very reasonable chance of being accepted, but SIGIR is a difficult venue in which to publish.
