Compare and Contrast #2: Moving to Mobile
Due Monday October 3, beginning of
class
The purpose of this assignment is to get you thinking critically about how to convert a paper-based measure of a behavior of interest to mobile measurement, in light of the readings so far.
- Pick a health-related behavior that you think is important to measure in the field, either to improve health research or to create more effective health interventions. You can use the same behavior you used in the first assignment if you wish, or a new one.
- Find an example of the most common (or a common) paper-based survey for assessing that behavior. You will need to track down the actual survey used. This may require contacting the author, going to the library, using inter-library loan, etc. Sometimes it is easy. Sometimes it is not. Start early.
- In light of the readings on mobile app design and paper prototyping, do your best to "convert" the survey to a mobile app. Assume the mobile app must run on a relatively small Android phone with a touch screen. You can use this template with the real size of the screen for your prototyping.
- In no more than one page (11pt), succinctly list the most challenging or troubling issues that come up, referencing concepts from the last two weeks of reading where applicable. What is tricky? Keep in mind issues about timing, location, various biases, etc. What do you think you would need to change about the questions in the paper survey to make answering the survey on the phone effective, in light of what we read? How does that change the nature of the survey questions? Could or would the survey be easier, harder, or about the same to answer on the phone, and why? Make sure your document has your name, email, department, and year in school.
Hand in the following:
- 1-page write up
- A copy of the paper survey you worked with.
- Two copies of your interface screen sketches on template pages. (Sketches only! Do not do this on the computer). (We may use one copy in class)
In addition to bringing the hard copies to class, send an email of the 1-page PDF to ...@neu.edu.
Name the file in this format: [your last name].compareconstrast2.pdf.
