Copy of the letter sent the end of 18 April 2004, by Bob Futrelle, to a large Linguistics Program mailing list: Based on discussions at yesterday's end-of-the-term party for the NU Linguistics Program, it's clear that there's a lot of interest in computational linguistics among the students. So I've started a site here: http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/futrelle/nlpgroup/ I need to know from everybody, how we should proceed with this. We talked about getting a seminar going in which we could read about, present and discuss NLP topics. I'll set up a mailing list, with archives for it too. A couple of questions about that: First, mailings *to* the list will be for members only, but membership is simple. I'll handle the membership requests from you. Question 1: Should the mailing list archives be private or public? An example of public archives, for a class, is here: https://lists.ccs.neu.edu/pipermail/isu535-sp04-rpf/ Question 2: Should the mailing list addresses be available to all members? My answer to the above is tentatively, yes. The second item is easy to turn on and off. In case anyone is wondering why I'm jumping in on this, I published my first paper on NLP in 1962 and one of my most recent NSF grants, ending last Fall, was for NLP research. If you look at my bionlp.org site, you'll also see that I'm pretty deeply into the subject (also linked on the new nlpgroup site): http://www.bionlp.org Hopefully, this will be the last "spam" from me on this topic. Further developments will be posted on the site. -- Bob Futrelle _______________________________________________________________ Robert P.
