Computing Resources
The College of Computer and Information Science provides computing resources for both undergraduate and graduate courses in the College, for individual student projects, and for faculty research. These facilities are constantly being upgraded to keep pace with developments in the computer industry. There are a number of different ways that you can access and utilize the College of Computer and Information Science's Computing Resources.
Another good resource besides this document for information on using our systems is our collection of HOWTO documents.
UNIX Lab - 102 West Village H.
The UNIX labs are open to all students in the College of Computer and Information Science. We have a large number of machines available running Solaris for your use. All of these machines are networked so that you can login to any machine using your UNIX Account and access your home directory and have all of your files available.
Any student taking a computer science course may apply for a workstation account. People who are not students in the college must be approved by a faculty member before they may receive an account. Account request forms (and further information) are available in the front office and outside the Systems Office (310 WVH).
WindowsXP Labs - 210, 212 West Village H.
The WindowsXP labs are open to all students in the College of Computer and Information Science. They run a software environment on top of Windows XP customized for the needs of our students.
The Network
Every classroom and office is on the network, which connects all the computers in the college to each other. Most of the file service and network services on the local network are provided by a Network Appliance and a battery of Enterprise-class Sun servers.
We also offer wireless access for our majors, grad students, faculty and staff. For more information on the wireless access, please see our Nomad information.
The College is connected to the Internet and Internet2 via several OC-3 links to Genuity and the Northern Crossroads Gigapop. We are known on the Internet as "ccs.neu.edu". Electronic mail may be sent to a user of the College's network by mailing to "username@ccs.neu.edu".
Remote Access
Remote access is provided via SSH to our public workstations (we do not allow insecure connections like telnet). Please see our welcome page for more information on SSH.
Dialup access is provide to our majors, grad students and faculty by our Nomad network.
