- 1. What is the first thing I should do before I sit down?
- Your checklist:
- Punch in the timeclock via "proctorin".
- Check the cleanliness of the lab.
- Check for anyone eating or drinking and ask them to remove
such articles. If you're shy and don't wish to confront
them, then send mail to lab-admin, and have them be the "bad guy".
- Check for broken/confused machines and if you find any, send
mail to systems
- Check for `xlock'd machines and if you find any, send mail to
systems
- Check the status of the printer. Make sure it's not
backlogged with requests and make sure it's full of paper.
- Answer any generic user questions, maintain library, etc...
By "generic user questions", we mean "how do I print?", "when
will the lab be closing?", etc. We do not expect you, nor want you
to do other people's homework.
- Sit down at the proctor desk. If you are working an early morning shift, punch *86 into the
cardswiper and swipe your card. This downloads the latest data from the registrar.
- 2. What if the timeclock terminal isn't working?
- Try power-cycling the terminal. Not the computer upon which the
terminal sits, but the display terminal itself. If this does not
work, email systems and lab-admin.
- 3. If I have problems where do I send mail?
- There are three possibilities, please choose accordingly:
- If there are problems with hardware/software, with Heating/
Ventilation/Air Conditioning, or leaky roofs, then you should
send mail to systems.
- If you have questions about your work schedule or paychecks
then send mail to lab-admin.
- If you want to offer or take a shift, then send mail to
proctors. Please note, The proctors mail list should be used
sparingly. Trading of hours can all be done in the schedule section.
- 4. Where can I get more paper for printers?
- Please check the amount of paper frequently. If we've already
run out of paper, then you sending mail is a tad too late and
hardly a preventative measure. So, please do the following checks
at the beginning of your shift:
- Check for a few spare reams next to or underneath the printer.
- If there are none, check for more paper on the rack in the back of the room.
- If you notice that we're running low, please send mail to lab-admin.
- If there is a dire need for paper, go down to the Systems
Office (310 WVH) and ask for some paper for the labs.
- 5. What if there's an emergency in the lab?
- Call the Northeastern Police at 373-2121 as soon as possible. There is also a panic button beneath the proctor desk. Do
not be a hero. The school is insured. Do not feel like it is your
duty to "save the day". Afterwards, you should send mail to systems and
lab-admin.
- 6. What if there's a class during my shift?
- There may be a class held in the lab during your shift. During this
time you should post a LAB CLOSED sign on the door, and keep
people who are not in the class out of the lab. You should assist
the instructor with computer operations in any way you can: such
as installing software on the Macs or formatting disks, or making
sure the printer actually prints, or notifying systems of
problems.
- 7. When is it okay for someone to have a drink in the lab?
- Never. The dean has asked that the proctors make sure NO food or
drink is allowed in the labs. They can't have it on the floor,
and they will try that one. They can put it in their schoolbag,
but keep an eye on them and make sure they don't take it back
out. If they do, either have them remove the drink from the lab
or do it yourself. Note: The proctor is no exception to this rule.
- 8. Can I leave the lab open and unattended?
- No.
- But what if I...
- No.
- But even if...
- No.
- 9. What is the payroll week cycle?
- The payroll cycle goes from Sunday to Saturday. You will be paid every Friday.
Please note that you must fill out timesheets under MyNEU Student Employment as
indicated in your hiring confirmation e-mail. These are due every Monday by noon.
- 10. What if the next proctor is late or absent?
- You have 2 choices: You can either take that shift and continue
to work, or you can close and lock the lab (and make sure to set
the alarm) and proctorout and leave.
- 11. Where is the proctorin/proctorout terminal for the other labs?
- No matter which lab you work in, you need to run the proctorin
and proctorout commands on the terminal in 102. It will ask you
which lab you are proctoring in for.
