Vassilis Tsaoussidis

Professor Tsaoussidis conducts research in network protocols and management of heterogeneous wired/wireless environments.
In particular, he is working on a new generation of transport and application-level protocols. Professor Tsaoussidis has recently introduced a new communication paradigm at the transport layer: Waves and Probing. This paradigm allows for sophisticated error control strategies, leading to energy-conserving and high-throughput communications. That is, longer battery-life for mobile internet devices, better application quality of service and more efficient communication systems.

Since tomorrow's internet requires a more sophisticated service model, his group develops protocols that can adjust their service characteristics to the user's preferences, network conditions, specific application's requirements and even cost constraints. His approach takes into account the tradeoffs developed at this level: energy and throughput, reliability and delay/jitter, image quality and reliability. Furthermore, he is working on the architectural aspects of next generation communication systems, aiming at efficient network/communication management from the application's perspective.

Vassilis Tsaoussidis has held a postdoctoral appointment (1997/98) at Rutgers, New Brusnwick and a faculty appointment (1998/99, 1999/2000) at SUNY, Stony Brook. He is a member of TCCC and SIGCOMM and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing.
