Professor Wang's research concerns advanced technologies for pattern recognition, learning, understanding, and visualization, using intelligent techniques. He has been creating a virtual laboratory in which testing and experiments can be conducted on multimedia Internet for various two- and three-dimensional images and objects, including articulated objects. The techniques he has developed are applicable to real-life problems in many fields, including industrial-parts inspection, document-image recognition, and military needs. He also has worked with the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on several image-analysis projects, including optical character recognition (OCR) and bank-check recognition, and has been granted three USA/Europe OCR patents.
A full professor at Northeastern University and iCORE (Informatics Circle of Research excellence) Visiting Professor at University of Calgary, Canada, Professor Wang previously served on the faculty of the University of Oregon and Boston University, and as a senior researcher at Southern Bell, GTE Labs, and Wang Labs.
Professor Wang has published over 120 technical papers and 20 books on pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and imaging technologies. He is the founding editor-in-charge of the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, and editor-in-chief of the book series Machine Perception & Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Wang has been elected Fellow of IAPR (International Association for Pattern Recognition), and served as Conference General Co-Chair for the 18th ICPR (International Conference on Pattern Recognition), held in 2006 at Hong Kong, China. He is also an invited speaker on "Biometrics" for IASTED's AIA2007(Artificial Intelligence Applications) at Innsbruck, Austria.
