Statement of Need and List of Topics

Many academic researchers in computer science would like their research to be of relevance to the computer industry. They would be willing to work on topics which enhance products and are immediately useful. However, often they are unable to discover which topics fall in that category. In addition, academics have incentives to write papers which will be easy to get accepted for publication in good journals and conferences. This normally requires algorithmic and/or mathematical content. The problem is to find projects which yield publishable papers yet are of interest to industry. That is why we would like to be able to listen to industrial researchers describe projects and problems they have worked on which had an intellectual, possibly mathematical or scientific content. But researchers in industry have no incentive to give such talks. They must produce products and patents, not papers. The goal of this workshop is to get to hear about the intellectual problems that are also practical, to discover mechanisms to enable academics to keep in touch with emerging projects of this nature and to disseminate this information to a wide audience.
