Extra requirements for graduate students: In addition to the undergraduate course requirements, graduate students must each conduct one additional empirical research study and attend one extra seminar meeting per week during the semester. The study must be on a topic and use methods approved by the instructor, and utilize at least one advanced statistical analysis technique not covered in class (e.g., longitudinal data analysis, dyadic data analysis, general linear methods, sequential analysis, causal path analysis, etc.). Graduate students must submit a proposal, give a presentation on the study and analysis technique to be used, and apply for Northeastern IRB approval in the first half of the semester, and prepare a final report and give a second presentation on the results of their study by the end of the semester. In addition to project presentations, the seminar meetings will be used to critique study designs from the current HCI literature.
Seminar Schedule: We will keep the seminar content and format very fluid. Tentatively, we will spend the first half of the semester reviewing and critiquing studies from the HCI literature. During each of these classes one student will present the work (10 minutes) and their critique. Thereafter, all students will discuss and critique it. Towards the middle of the semester, study proposals (including IRB applications) will be presented and discussed. The second half of the semester will be spent discussing advanced study designs and statistical analysis techniques, with two students assigned to each give 20 minute presentations on a particular technique. At the end of the semester, all students will have an opportunity to present the results from their studies. Time will be allocated in all classes for discussing issues that arise in the design and conduct of student studies.
