How Grading works

Syllabus

The Overview courses are designed to help students prepare for the working world. Therefore you should treat this class like a job. Understand that you will be graded according to principles used in the professional workplace, which include the following:

  • All students are expected to attend all classes, attend the entire class, and to turn in assignments on time.
  • Students are expected to be alert and attentive, and to participate meaningfully in class activities.
  • Assignments are due at the start of class.
  • Students will not be admitted to class late. The Overview course is designed to prepare students for the working world. In the working world, being late for work is generally frowned upon, if not punished. Consider this practice.
  • The maximum points possible on a late assignment will be 1/2 of possible total. Assignments are considered late after the instructor has collected them in class. You may still turn in an assignment up to 5 p.m. on the same day for late (1/2 max) credit. After 5 p.m., the assignment becomes worthless so there's no point in turning it in.
  • Grading on group assignments will be based on an average of the work of all members of the group. In the working world, teams are judged on the overall result/product, not each individual's contribution. Again, consider this practice.
  • Points accumulated at the end of the semester will be curved and compared against the average score for the class. All grades which fall below C- will receive an automatic "F". (Because in the working world, "below average" work is never acceptable.)
