Problem sets and programming assignments:
There will be a total of 5 problem-sets/programming-assignments.
Four of them will count for 10 points each while one of them (sensor
programming) will count for 15 points (for a total of 55 points).
All
the homeworks (problemsets
and programming assignments) are to be done individually except for the
programming assignment Sensor which is to be done in a group of 2. One week
will be given for solving each homework. Homeworks are due at the beginning of class. As a general
rule the penalty on homework turned in up to a week late will be 20% and no
homework will be accepted a week past its due date. Students may discuss the
homeworks with one another, but solutions to problem sets should be written up
separately, unless otherwise explicitly stated by the instructor. Names of
collaborators must be noted in the solutions. If a key idea is obtained from
another person (other than the instructor) or from another book or paper (other
than the course textbook), then the source of that idea should be cited.
Solutions should be presented in a clear and concise manner.
One (midterm) Exam: A 1.5-hour closed book midterm exam will
be held in class from 2:50 to 4:30 AM on 11/03/08. This exam will cover all the material
taught up to that point. This midterm exam will count for 25 points towards
your final credit.
Term Paper/Final Project: Students (in groups of 2 to 4) are
required to select a topic and produce a Term Paper of length 5 to 6 pages, single-spaced. The topic may be
selected from a list of topics provided by the instructor; the students in
consultation with the instructor may also determine them. The last three
classes of the course are reserved for 15-minute presentations on these Term
Papers. It is encouraged that the Term Paper be accompanied by demos, though
this is not strictly necessary. The Term Paper will count for 20 points and
students in a group will get the same number of points.
