Required Format for Your Presentation
- Quick Review. Everyone will have read the paper, so this is just to remind us all what it is about. Suggestion: 1 powerpoint chart on the big idea, 1 powerpoint chart on the evaluation, 2 minutes duration.
- More Details. Present more information than is in the paper. It is strongly suggested you either show a video or give a demo of the system (or a very similar system), or prototype and demo some part of the system to show off the main concepts. Suggestion: multimedia, 4 minutes duration.
- Critique. Present your in-depth analysis of the paper and its strengths and weaknesses, covering some or all of (a) novelty, (b) usefulness/impact,
(c) soundness of approach, (d) evaluation (soundness of evaluation and
significance of findings). Suggestion: 1 powerpoint chart, 3 minutes duration.
- Extension. Present at least one way you would extend the research. Suggestion: 1 powerpoint chart, 3 minutes duration.
Grading
- This presentation counts for 10% of your course grade, so please prepare accordingly. You should become the class expert on your assigned paper. If you have not given presentations before, or feel nervous, or are unsure of your presentation skills, please practice with some classmates ahead of time. The instructor and TA will be happy to review your charts beforehand with you.
- Quick Review (10%) - Did you present the essence of the paper as succinctly as possible?
- More Details (40%) - Did you spend time to find or construct a demo of the system that highlights additional features not in the paper?
- Critique (15%) - Did you analyze the paper's strengths and weaknesses?
- Extension (20%) - Is your extension important, novel, and clearly related to the paper?
- Q&A (ability to answer questions) (15%) - Is it clear you understand the paper, background information, and related work?
- Demerits - Your grade will be lowered one full letter grade if you go over your total allotted time. Your grade will also be lowered one full letter grade if you paste any text from the paper into your powerpoint (except for text in figures), or if you spend a significant amount of time reading the text on your slides. Your grade will be lowered two full letter grades if you fail to show up for your presentation or contact the instructor less than a week in advance to reschedule.
Logistics
Since you will likely be showing demos or videos, you should plan on giving your presentation off of your own laptop. You must check out compatability with the room A/V system ahead of time (before class start or during break). Speakers or audio are generally available, but you should avoid reliance on Internet connectivity. Have a backup plan (e.g., presentation on a flash drive) ready to go. Time taken to prepare your A/V before you start counts against your total time allocation.
