Challenge Problems
These are optional problems that you can try to solve in order to earn extra points. These points will be added to your final grade, according to the formula stated in the syllabus. Expect these problems to be "real-life": quite hard, perhaps a little ambiguous, non-straightforward. Points for them are not meant as a give-away. The frequency of challenge problems, and how much each is worth, will be determined as the class goes along.
The rules for participation are as follows.
- You must not discuss these problems with anyone outside your group other than the instructor.
- You must present your solution to the instructor in writing
and defend it during an oral exam. If you turn in a
perfect solution and then we find during the exam that you
don't understand what you have written, I will assume the
solution was copied from somewhere, and you will certainly get
zero points.
- We will be much stricter in the allocation of experience points for challenge problems than we are with homework. The idea is that you either complete the problem, or you do not. Unless you made some minor mistake, do not expect to get any points for partial solutions.
- How to turn in: hand it over to the instructor in
hardcopy form (typed or legibly hand-written), NOT VIA
EMAIL.
